“You deserve a break.”
“It’s not so bad.”
“It’ll make you feel so much better.”
“It’s only a little bit, it won’t hurt you.”
Lies that we hear from the devil that seem all so alluring. The subtle lie is that we can take a rest from temptations and indulge in sin for a little bit. But, the scheme of the devil is not for us to jump into his net, but for us to nibble on his hook. It’s a ongoing battle to constantly fight against the desires of the flesh and the temptations of the devil. It’s a battle that demands constant vigilance.
King David fell pretty hard when he decided to take a rest. Here was a man after God’s own heart and a mighty warrior (Saul hath slain his thousands and David his ten thousands). And during the time when kings go out to battle, David decided to take a rest from his conquests. Well, he took a rest from his military conquests, but couldn’t avoid a sexual conquest. After going to bed with a beauty who liked to bathe on her housetop, things got pretty complicated afterwards. His new mistress got pregnant. And David tried to come up with a scheme to absolve himself, but it didn’t quite work out. So, he resorted to murdering her husband to marry her. But, the complications don’t stop there, cause it ultimately affects his kingdom and his children.
We cannot ever rest against fighting temptations. We must not compromise with sin. We must not blindly give in to the lies of the devil. The devil is always looking for a chance to trip us up.
Genesis 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Lord God, give me strength to resist the devil. Help me to never compromise. It is only by your grace and strength that we can stand against temptations. Constantly remind me to never rest against temptations. In Jesus name, amen.
