Ever since I was a kid, I hated Valentine’s Day. I was inculcated with a distate for it because it was supposed to be a day where you got cards from your “secret admirer”. However, over all the years, I never received a single one, except by those who were forced to give me one. And now that I’m married, I feel like I’m forced to buy useless tokens and trinkets to show my love.
Another reason not to celebrate it is that it has such dubious origins. It originally started off as a Roman pagan holiday, festival of Lupercalia, where you had a chance to have sex with another married person. In the 3rd century, the Catholic church honored Feb 14 after Saint Valentine and turned it into a religious holiday. Now, modern consumerism has made it into a bonanza for card, flower, and diamond companies.
