I was asked what I thought about the Confederate Flag at AmericasDebate. Here was my response:
I guess part of the problem is that the Southern Cross flag has been used as the banner by racist groups and individuals. So, it has been associated with racism. Though the original meaning of the Southern Cross is independence from the North, not racism.
I feel that the flag should be maintained for historical reasons. But the symbolism of independence is outdated. So, there’s no need to fly it on the Capital. But, for tourist spots, it should be left up.
Though if the South ever does decide to secede again, I think they should definitely put it back up on the Capital.
