Last week, EarthLink co-founder Reed Slatkin was sentenced for 14 years in federal prison for running the largest private Ponzi scheme of $593 million. He was also ordered to pay $240 m for restitution. His defense? Scientology made him do it.
“There is no question that the hold the Church had on Mr. Slatkin was significant,” lawyer Brian Sun told the court. “It took us a while to de-program Mr. Slatkin.”
Yes, scientology is full of fraud, but I’d have to say that is a pretty lame defense.
