Now I can have my own supercomputer. I’d have to acquire hundreds of computers, but FlashMobComputing has open sourced their software to run a distributed supercomputer. The software is based on the Knoppix distro.
FlashMobComputing is the brainchild of Pat Miller, Greg Benson, John Witchel and several grad students at the University of San Francisco. In early April, 700 computers were gathered for one day to build a temporary supercomputer. Though the most they got to work simultaneously was 256, they proved that the concept was feasible.
