Three shots were fired. Ahmaud bled to death on the scene.

On Feb 27, Brunswick District Attorney Jackie Johnson wrote a letter recusing herself from the investigation in order to avoid a conflict of interest.

Johnson requested that the state’s attorney general, Christopher Carr, assign the case to another office to investigate.

The case was then referred to Waycross District Attorney George E. Barnhill, who also recused himself from the case.

April 13, Carr then assigned Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney Tom Durden to the case.
