I just figured out how to listen to my Windows Media files on my laptop from my PPC-6700. The two are connected through wifi, so now I can walk throughout the house and listen to my music library on my laptop.

Here’s how to do it:

Make the “My Music” folder on the laptop a shared folder. Then on the PPC, make sure wifi is on. Then connect to the laptop with Total Commander. Go to the root folder and double click on “\\”. Double click on “LAN”. Double click on “new server”. Enter a connection name. Then enter the laptop computer name (eg “\\mycomputer”). Double click on the new connection and enter your username and password. Now you should see the “My Music” folder on the laptop.

Browse to a wma file and double click it. It should start Windows Media Player on the PPC and play the file.

Now, the next step is how to play more than one music file. The Pocket WMP only searches for music on the PPC. So, my solution is to use a playlist of music that is on the laptop. But, unfortunately, there is no playlist editor preinstalled on the PPC. So you’ll need to install a playlist editor.

Then create your playlist with songs on the laptop. The path should include the laptop name, folder, and wma file. For example, one of my entries is – “\\mycomputer\My Music\Chicago\Greatest Hits\Stay the Night.wma”. The easiest way to do this is to copy from Total Commander instead of typing it all in. Then save the playlist in “My Music” on the PPC.

In Pocket WMP, update the library for it to load the newly created playlist. Now you should see it in “My Playlists”. It’s now good to go.
