President Obama on Friday morning at 8:20 a.m. signed off on the operation that killed terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, the commander-in-chief reviewed final preparations for a special forces raid on a highly fortified compound in Pakistan. He then was notified at 3:50 p.m. that bin Laden, the founder of al Qaeda, had been “tentatively identified,” and he received additional briefings in the White House situation room throughout the night, the official said.

In a dramatic late-night appearance in the East Room of the White House, Mr. Obama declared that “justice has been done” as he disclosed that American military and C.I.A. operatives had finally cornered Bin Laden, the Al Qaeda leader who had eluded them for nearly a decade. American officials said Bin Laden resisted and was shot in the head. He was later buried at sea.
The plot of land was roughly eight times larger than the other homes in the area.
